WORKSHOPS
“ Blooming Marvellous!” with Diane Cox
Workshop - Not suitable for complete beginners
The class Diane is teaching will be called “ Blooming Marvellous!”.
We will be using collage and oil pastels to create a piece of artwork, based on flowers, which can then be translated into a rug. Collage is fun, and is a fabulous way to provide inspiration for hooked rugs.
For those who have never tried it, it is very simple! If you can tear paper and use glue you can do it.
We will look at flower paintings and use these as inspiration for our collages ....we are not copying them.
I will have plenty of images for you to choose from, but if you have any particular favourites do bring them along.
Then, we will use the collage as a design for our rugs.
Please bring a good selection of magazines..Country Living type magazines are good, and gardening ones, and should you have any Gudrun Sjoden catalogues ,these are great! Lovely paper and colours.
I will provide oil pastels, glue and paper.
However, if you have your own oil pastels, please do bring them.
You will also need hessian..bring plenty so that you can decide on the day what size rug you would like to make, frame, scissors, hooks , marker pens etc.,
and a good supply of colourful recycled fabrics.
I will be bringing lots for you to use but the more we have, the better!
On the second day, when you are all happily hooking away, I will read you some stories!
‘’Natural Landscapes Swaledale’’ with Anne Hewitt
Workshop -Not suitable for complete beginners
In this workshop you will be working from 1 of 3 images that I will supply – Heather Moor, River Swale and Blue Skies.
Working on hessian (available to purchase) we will go through the process of transferring the image to canvas, choosing colours and looking for textures….a gentle process that you go through as you begin to hook! I will have some yarns available for purchase in relevant colour ways.
You can choose to opt for a ‘natural‘ image or create something a little more abstract using the photo as a base if that is your preference.
The resulting piece will be of a size suitable for a Wall Hanging and could be framed or as a cushion front.
Quillies with Gill Curwen
Workshop - Suitable for all students from beginners
Quillie rugs in their purest sense are rarely seen ‘quillie coils’ are usually added to give more depth and interest to hooked or prodded or mixed media rugs. A Quillie rug needs no background fabrics and no highly specialised equipment – except the length of the needles. With a Quillie you can re-use even the tiniest pieces of wool, to add that little spark of colour and depth.
In this workshop students will begin their own Quillie rug which can be symmetrical or entirely random. For those who would really like a challenge, we can delve into the art of Quillie portraiture human or animal. The beauty of this technique is that you are able to create coils and
compose your design entirely as you go along to achieve a pleasing result plus, a Quillie doesn’t necessarily have a set finishing point it can be whatever you want it to be.
You will start your Quillie in this class but you will be able to keep coming back to it at any point if you feel the need to add more Gill’s own rugs often start off as coasters but end up as full size hearth rugs or wallhangings.
We will also be using the complementary technique of shirring which Gill frequently combines with her standing wool work. This relaxed and friendly class is a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild and really push the boundaries of what a Quillie rug can be.
