WORKSHOPS

“ Blooming Marvellous!” with Diane Cox
Workshop - Not suitable for complete beginners

The class Diane is teaching will be called “ Blooming Marvellous!”.
We will be using collage and oil pastels to create a piece of artwork, based on flowers, which can then be translated into a rug. Collage is fun, and is a fabulous way to provide inspiration for hooked rugs.
For those who have never tried it, it is very simple! If you can tear paper and use glue you can do it.
We will look at flower paintings and use these as inspiration for our collages ....we are not copying them.
I will have plenty of images for you to choose from, but if you have any particular favourites do bring them along.
Then, we will use the collage as a design for our rugs.
Please bring a good selection of magazines..Country Living type magazines are good, and gardening ones, and should you have any Gudrun Sjoden catalogues ,these are great! Lovely paper and colours.
I will provide oil pastels, glue and paper.
However, if you have your own oil pastels, please do bring them.
You will also need hessian..bring plenty so that you can decide on the day what size rug you would like to make, frame, scissors, hooks , marker pens etc.,
and a good supply of colourful recycled fabrics.
I will be bringing lots for you to use but the more we have, the better!
On the second day, when you are all happily hooking away, I will read you some stories!

‘’Natural Landscapes Swaledale’’ with Anne Hewitt
Workshop -Not suitable for complete beginners

In this workshop you will be working from 1 of 3 images that I will supply – Heather Moor, River Swale and Blue Skies.
Working on hessian (available to purchase) we will go through the process of transferring the image to canvas, choosing colours and looking for textures….a gentle process that you go through as you begin to hook! I will have some yarns available for purchase in relevant colour ways.
You can choose to opt for a ‘natural‘ image or create something a little more abstract using the photo as a base if that is your preference.
The resulting piece will be of a size suitable for a Wall Hanging and could be framed or as a cushion front.

Quillies with Gill Curwen

Workshop - Suitable for all students from beginners

Quillie rugs in their purest sense are rarely seen  ‘quillie coils’ are usually added to give more depth and interest to hooked or prodded or mixed media rugs. A Quillie rug needs no background fabrics and no highly specialised equipment – except the length of the needles. With a Quillie you can re-use even the tiniest pieces of wool, to add that little spark of colour and depth.
In this workshop students will begin their own Quillie rug which can be symmetrical or entirely random. For those who would really like a challenge, we can delve into the art of Quillie portraiture human or animal. The beauty of this technique is that you are able to create coils and
compose your design entirely as you go along to achieve a pleasing result plus, a Quillie doesn’t necessarily have a set finishing point it can be whatever you want it to be.
You will start your Quillie in this class but you will be able to keep coming back to it at any point if you feel the need to add more Gill’s own rugs often start off as coasters but end up as full size hearth rugs or wallhangings.
We will also be using the complementary technique of shirring which Gill frequently    combines with her standing wool work. This relaxed and friendly class is a great opportunity to let your imagination run wild and really push the boundaries of  what a Quillie rug can be.

Reeth Rug Retreat 2016 has been a huge success. What a fabulous weekend we have had. The weather was beautiful with plenty of sunshine and warm enough to sit outside and have lunch. It was a truly International weekend with students from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Spain. Thank you to the three teachers Amy Oxford, Ingrid Hieronimus and Heather Ritchie who taught three wonderful workshops with  exceptional pieces started and indeed some finished. The auction was a hoot from start to finish with enough funds raised to give scholarships of £85 each to five students towards their 2017 fees. Thank you to the ladies who brought yummy cakes for everyone to tuck into morning noon and night. and thank you to all of our lovely students who made the weekend so perfect. Cilla

Reeth Rug Retreat Report September 2016
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I signed up for the Reeth Rug Retreat (RRR)in the Yorkshire Dales, and even less sure after an arduous car journey from the south of England, finding new roads that weren’t on my 2011 road atlas or even on my un-updated SatNav, eventually announcing that “You have reached your destination”, when all I could see was sheep, perpendicular roads (what’s at the top, who knows what lies beyond…), a marvellous hilly view with threatening thunderclouds and a clump of tall trees.  I then saw a gate, blocked by sheep so I gingerly proceeded and traversed the grid into Grinton Lodge.  I found Cilla in the school shop, where she directed me to get my key at reception.  After settling in to my comfortable room, I headed (quite late) to my first class with Ingrid Hieronimus, a fellow Canadian.  In that classroom I met a lovely group of ladies hooking away on Stain Glass pieces.  When I announced that I needed a cup of tea before I could do anything, Elisabeth offered to put the kettle on and headed to the kitchen to make a pot of Yorkshire nectar.  I could cope with anything now!
I had a magical weekend with like-minded rug hookers.  My head was buzzing with all the new things I was learning, and ways to jump outside the rug hooking box – I could barely take it all in.  In addition, the kindness and conviviality of the 30+ group made me feel very welcome.  This rug hooking school has been running for 17 years by the talented duo of Heather Ritchie and Cilla Cameron – they are so incredible they even arranged for spectacular weather for the 2016 retreat!
I am looking forward to the next RRR in September 2017 and, like many others, getting very excited about the TIGHR Swaledale Triennial event in October 2018.

Workshops 2016

Heather has added another dimension to her class this year mixed media.  The class will  focus on Appliqué pictures/patterns that will in turn be appliquéd to your hessian and the remainder of the design will be hooked and/or prodded. There will be some basic embroidery stitches plus extra embellishments. They are so much fun.
For those who would rather “take it easy” it will be a  relaxed open class where students can work on any design using hooking and/or proddy. Start a new project or bring a rug you are already working on for inspiration and direction. It will be a refresher course where you pick up new techniques and ideas. Wool on Wool with Amy Oxford
Amy lives in Vermont USA is the owner of The Oxford Company and the The Oxford Rug Hooking School. Amy is well known for Punch Needle rug hooking classes this will be Amy’s second visit to Reeth Rug Retreat. www.amyoxford.com
In this class we will be punching with wool yarn directly on to wool fabric. The punch needle glides easily through the wool backing and creates a lovely effect! The real beauty of this method is that you don't have to punch any background! The wool fabric itself becomes the background. We'll use the #14 “Mini" Oxford Punch Needle (a tool invented by the instructor) and double knitting or other similar weight fine yarns to make two small pieces that can later be made into pillows, bags, or other projects. There will be several designs to choose from or design your own. Perfect for experienced punchers and beginners.
Class time will be spent on the punching itself, not on the finishing techniques for turning your work into a pillow, bag, etc. There will be a demonstration at the end of class for an easy way to turn your piece into a pillow as well as a handout on this for a reminder.

FABULOUS LEAVES with Ingrid Hieronimus

Ingrid Hieronimus is a certified teacher of the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild.  She has also completed her certification in the Fibre Arts in Rug Hooking program, at St. Lawrence College in Brockville, as well as her McGowan certification.  She has been rug hooking for 35 years, teaching, and supplying for 20 years.  Ingrid is the owner/operator of Ragg Tyme Studio in Mannheim (Kitchener) Ontario and Director of the Ragg Tyme School of Rug Hooking at Niagara College.  She conducts seminars, workshops, and individual classes in her studio as well as in classrooms across Canada, the United States and England.  She is the author of the dye books Primary Fusion, Primary Fusion Spots, and Multiple Fusion Spots.  Ingrid’s rugs have been featured in rug hooking magazines and exhibits in Ontario and across the country.

The beauty of leaves, with their infinite variety of shape and colouring can be very fascinating to rug hookers.  Leaves can be bicoloured and even tricoloured, or they can be beautifully fringed with intricate veining.  Some examples are the hosta leaves, coleus leaves, geranium leaves, and the begonia leaves, just to name a few. This class will involve stylised leaves as well as realistic type leaves. Choosing the right background can also have a great impact on your leaves.   Different ways to achieve this will be discussed.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for the student to stretch their imagination and try some different techniques that they have not tried before. You may design your own or use a commercial pattern.  Any size cut may be used.  Patterns and prices will be sent once you have booked into the class
